Special Sneak Preview Screening!!
AINT IT COOL NEWS/AMERICAN
CINEMATHEQUE SNEAK PREVIEW SHOWCASE.
The groundbreaking Internet website Aint It Cool News
and the American Cinematheque are joining forces once again to present a special Sneak
Preview of an upcoming movie that we think is really exceptional and exciting.
Eight years in the making with a budget of $27
million, STEAMBOY is the costliest animated feature film ever produced outside of the
United States. A seamless hybrid of traditional hand-drawn
animation and 3-D computer-generated
effects, STEAMBOY also showcases several new breakthroughs in animation and digital
technology. These include the use of tracking camera effects and the rendering of
astoundingly life-like steam effects.
Set in 19th Century Great Britain,
at the time of the Great Exhibition, STEAMBOY is a epic story about the power of science,
mans quest to control nature, and above all courage. STEAMBOY features
an inventor prodigy named Ra Stim,
who receives a mysterious metal ball which
contains
a new form of energy capable of powering an entire nation. This young boy must use it to
fight evil, redeem his family, and save London from destruction. The lush Victorian
interiors and the elegance of the era's mechanical design allow Otomo to create dazzling
visual backgrounds and machines.
With more than 180,000 drawings and 400 CG cuts, STEAMBOY is one of the most elaborate
animated features of 2005.
In 1988, Katsuhiro Otomo took the worlds of anime and science-fiction
by storm with his post-apocalyptic cyberpunk adventure Akira. The film set new standards for the genres
and is internationally regarded as a benchmark achievement in animation. Born in Miyagi,
Japan in 1954, Mr. Otomo began his career as a comic book illustrator in 1973. His unique
style helped Otomo quickly establish himself as a leading figure in the world of Japanese manga. Since Akira, Otomo has directed the live-action comedy/horror film World Apartment Horror and
several animated shorts, as well as written the
screenplays for the anime hits Rojin Z and Metropolis.
In Japanese with English subtitles.

A NIGHT WITH ANIMATOR CHRIS LANDRETH
Presented in Association with
ASIFA-International Animated Film Association
Chris Landreth began his career as an engineer, not an animator.
When he made the leap to animation, that training came in handy while working for
Alias/Wavefront, where he tested new animation software, before it was released to the
public. This led to his first to shorts, "the end" and "Bingo".
Chris has evolved into a realm of animation he calls "psycho-realism" with his
latest short "Ryan", which challenges our notions of documentary and animation.
We will also show two of Ryan Larkins shorts, the acclaimed, mysterious animator and
subject of "Ryan". Chris Landreths "The End" (6 min,
1995) This twisted, surreal film about the directors challenge to create was
nominated for an Academy Award in 1996 for Best Animated Short Film. This was produced by
Alias/Wavefront to test new features in the development of its animation software MAYA.
Chris Landreths "Bingo" (5 min, 1998) Award-winning short full of
Chriss bizarre imagery and exaggerated characters. This short announces
"Chriss particular style of "psychological realism". Chris
Landreths "Ryan" (14 min, 2004) Chriss evolving
"psycho-realism" style is represented through "Ryans"combination
of hand-animated combination of photo-realism, animation and documentary..
Ryan Larkins "Walking" (5 min, 1968).
Nominated for Academy Award for Animated Short in 1968. Extraordinarily influential
observation of the way people walk. This film is still used to teach animation students
the basics of human motion. Ryan Larkins "Street Musique" (9 min,
1972). Amusing and imaginative abstract and caricactures of familiar rituals fill this
tribute to street musicians. Chris Landreth will appear for an extended Q & A to
discuss his groundbreaking techniques in animation and the influence of the work of Ryan
Larkin.

If youre looking for a little supernatural action and romance
on Valentines Day, the groundbreaking Internet website Aint It Cool News

Preview of an upcoming movie that we think is really exceptional and exciting:
CONSTANTINE, 2005, Warner Bros.
Dir. Francis Lawrence. Based on the DC/Vertigo comic book "Hellblazer" and
written by Kevin Brodbin, Mark Bomback and Frank Capello, CONSTANTINE tells the story of
irreverent supernatural detective John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), who has
literally been to hell and back. When Constantine teams up with skeptical policewoman
Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) to solve the mysterious suicide of her twin sister
(also played by Weisz), their investigation takes them through the world of demons and
angels that exists just beneath the landscape of contemporary Los Angeles. Caught in a
catastrophic series of otherworldy events, the two become inextricably involved and seek
to find their own peace at whatever cost. We should add
that director Francis Lawrence makes his debut with this film, and will be joining us
afterwards for a discussion!

ABEL
RAISES CAIN 2004, 84 min. Dir. Jenny Abel. This documentary about professional
prankster Alan Abel, who amongst other things, campaigned for clothes for animals, faked
his own death, and claimed to be Deep Throat. In this exploration, lovingly shot by his
daughter, Jenny, she reflects on this extraordinary man, her father, who marches to the
beat of his own drum, the media and the old adage, "Dont believe everything you
see or hear." Discussion following the screening with the director.
"Run To Jay's" 2004, 16
min, dir. Brett Spackman documents a competition that spanned 3 years with one simple
mission: sprint from the front door to Jays Market across the street and around the

feature. A feature length documentary and a 16 min. short (preceding the feature) will be

"The Stuff That Dreams
Are Made Of" Celebrating 75 Years of THE MALTESE FALCON!!
Since 1930, when writer Dashiell Hammett first published
his classic novel The Maltese Falcon, his hard-luck detective hero Sam Spade and
the hunt for that certain "Black Bird" has held the public imagination an
almost-mystical grip. Warner Bros. Studio immediately seized on the books potential,
quickly turning out three adaptations in the space of a decade: THE MALTESE FALCON (aka
DANGEROUS FEMALE) in 1931, SATAN MET A LADY (1936), and finally the definitive FALCON in
1941. To celebrate the 75th publication of the book, join us for a special
double feature screening of the first and third versions:
THE MALTESE FALCON (aka DANGEROUS
FEMALE), 1931, Warner Bros., 80 min. Dir. Roy Del Ruth. This first take on
Dashiell Hammetts classic detective noir, subsequently overshadowed by the later
Bogie version, is surprisingly good and deserves a much wider audience. Ricardo Cortez holds
his own as a somewhat more unscrupulous Sam Spade, while Duddley Digges and Otto Matieson
as Gutman and Cairo match the chemsitry of the later Greenstreet/Lorre villain team. With
Bebe Daniels, Thelma Todd.
THE MALTESE FALCON, 1941, Warner
Bros., 101 min. Dir. John Huston. The most-justly famous of "Falcon"
adaptations, this classic film noir gives definitive life to Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart)
and a masterfully drawn group of characters involved in a dangerous and double-crossing
hunt for a bejeweled golden falcon statue. The first-rate cast includes Mary Astor,
Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet and Elisha Cook Jr.
>> Both films also playing at the Aero on
March 3.

Sam Peckinpah 80th Birthday
Salute:
World Premiere!! A
SIMPLE ADVENTURE STORY: SAM PECKINPAH, MEXICO AND THE WILD
BUNCH, 2005, Warner Bros., 40 min. Dir. Nick Redman. To celebrate the late Sam
Peckinpah's 80th birthday (February 21), were pleased to premiere a new documentary
on his greatest filmic achievement, unveiling yet another remarkable discovery from the
Warner Brothers vaults: a treasure trove of never-before-seen, Technicolor and Techniscope
outtakes from the movie's remarkable shoot in northern Mexico. Conceived as a sequel to
the Oscar-nominated THE WILD BUNCH: AN ALBUM IN MONTAGE (1996), this new documentary
juxtaposes rare footage with a trip to the actual locations by authors Paul Seydor, Garner
Simmons and David Weddle, along with Peckinpah's daughter Lupita, and filmmaker Nick
Redman in April 2004. This unusual film shows the effect a piece of art can have when it
strikes unerringly to the heart of a person at an impressionable age -- its memory staying
with them all their lives. Followed by:
THE WILD BUNCH, 1969, Warner Bros.,
145 min. Saddle up for a screening of director Sam Peckinpahs magnificent,
ultra-violent Western, starring William Holden, Ernest Borgnine, Warren Oates and Jaime
Sanchez as a band of doomed outlaws trying to outrun history. Exceedingly
controversial upon its initial release, THE WILD BUNCH forever changed the way violence
was depicted and perceived in the movies. Co-starring Robert Ryan, Edmond
OBrien, L.Q. Jones, Bo Hopkins and Strother Martin. Discussion between films with SIMPLE ADVENTURE filmmaker Nick Redman and
participants Lupita Peckinpah, Paul Seydor, David Weddle and Garner Simmons.
