Opening
Night for this series is at the Egyptian Theatre Exclusive!
Continuing in the glorious tradition of such filmmakers as
Roberto Rossellini, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Luchino
Visconti and Bernardo Bertolucci, contemporary Italian cinema remains among the most
vibrant and unpredictable anywhere in Europe, examining and celebrating an Italy both
ancient and modern, pastoral and urban. This week-long showcase of the best and most
challenging in new Italian filmmaking opens with the moving immigrant saga, THE GOLDEN
DOOR (NUOVOMONDO), directed by Emanuele Crialese. The series closes over two
nights with Gianni Amelios THE MISSING STAR (LA STELLA CHE
NON C'E') with Sergio Castellito as an Italian dealing with contradictory
business bureaucracy in China and Egidio Eronicos MY FATHER, starring Charlton
Heston, a fascinating and poignant look at the tragic legacy of Nazi war crimes for a
new generation. There will also be an in-person tribute to actress Valeria Golino
with one of her latest films, MARIOS WAR (LA GUERRA DI MARIO) directed by Antonio
Capuano as well as a screening of popular actor, Kim Rossi Stuarts
directorial debut film, ANCHE LIBERO VA BENE. Plus well be screening Nanni
