Night for this series is at the Egyptian Theatre Exclusive!
Continuing in the glorious tradition of such filmmakers as
Roberto Rossellini, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Luchino
Visconti and Bernardo Bertolucci, contemporary Italian cinema remains among the most
vibrant and unpredictable anywhere in Europe, examining and celebrating an Italy both
ancient and modern, pastoral and urban. This week-long showcase of the best and most
challenging in new Italian filmmaking opens with the moving immigrant saga, THE GOLDEN
DOOR (NUOVOMONDO), directed by Emanuele Crialese. The series closes over two
nights with Gianni Amelio’s THE MISSING STAR (LA STELLA CHE
NON C'E') with Sergio Castellito as an Italian dealing with contradictory
business bureaucracy in China and Egidio Eronico’s MY FATHER, starring Charlton
Heston, a fascinating and poignant look at the tragic legacy of Nazi war crimes for a
new generation. There will also be an in-person tribute to actress Valeria Golino
with one of her latest films, MARIO’S WAR (LA GUERRA DI MARIO) directed by Antonio
Capuano as well as a screening of popular actor, Kim Rossi Stuart’s
directorial debut film, ANCHE LIBERO VA BENE. Plus we’ll be screening Nanni
Moretti’s long-awaited cinematic finger-in-the-eye to former Prime Minister
Silvio Berlusconi, THE CAIMAN.

Dir. Antonio Capuano. Valeria Golino (RAIN MAN), one of the biggest
internationally recognized Italian actresses, stars as Giulia, whose unmarried and happy
life with Sandro falls into a turmoil when they adopt a difficult child, Mario. The
conflict between two socially and culturally distant realities intimidates Mario and
causes Giulia to reassess her life. Also starring Andrea Renzi, Rosaria De Cicco,
Nunzio Gallo, Lucia Ragni, Marco Grieco, Antonio Pennarella, Anita Caprioli, Imma Villa. Discussion following the film with director Antonio Capuano and actress

Alessandro D'Alatri. Actor/writer Fabio Volo is a 30-year-old accountant still

his plans to open a night club with his friends, but it doesn’t take long for him to
discover that his independent spirit cannot take orders. Also starring Valeria

US Premiere! THE CAIMAN (IL CAIMAN), 2006, Sacher Film, The Wild Bunch, 112
min. Directed by Nanni Moretti. Named after a South American alligator but
used here to refer to Italy's controversial prime minister, helmer Nanni Moretti's
long-awaited film combines entertaining comedy with an electrifying critique of Silvio
Berlusconi. With Silvio Orlando, Margherita Buy, Jasmine Trinca, Michele Placido, Jerzy
Stuhr, Elio De Capitani and Nanni Moretti. Discussion

showbiz and political personalities, comedian Sabina Guzzanti presents her own
criticism against the limitations on freedom of expression imposed by the former Prime
Minister Berlusconi's government on television programs. An official selection of the
section of World Documentary, 2006 Sundance Film Festival. Also starring Rory Bremner,
Daniele Luttazzi, Michele Santoro, Enzo Biagi, Fabrizio Morri, Valerio Terenzio, Andrea

min. Dir. Kim Rossi Stuart. Popular actor Kim Rossi Stuart’s directorial debut
features Tommi, an 11-year-old boy, who lives in Rome with his father (Stuart) and his
sister after their mother's disappearance. The unexpected return of the mother reopens old
wounds and soon the paternal figure is not what he was before, forcing Tommi to grow up
before his time. With Kim Rossi Stuart and Barbara Bobulova. Discussion in between films with VIVA actor Neri Marcorè as well as

Italian box office hits of the year is a comedy about preparing for the final exams that
will mark the end of high school and adolescence for a group of young people in Rome in
1980. Instead of studying, they manage to get caught up in a series of strange and

Dir. Sandro Baldoni. Antonio is a 40-year-old family man who dreams of moving to
London to open a restaurant. Followed by a mysterious man and his two bodyguards, he
becomes paranoid until he confronts the man and is told that destiny dictates he must be
killed. The story unravels in grotesque situations with an unexpected ending. With

FAMILY FRIEND (L’AMICO DI FAMIGLIA), 2006,
Fandango, The Wild Bnch , 108 min. Dir. Paolo Sorrentino. This new film expands
maverick director Paolo Sorrentino's singular vision, though this time he's crafted a more
complex world to illustrate his philosophy: "everyone steals, and everyone is
unhappy." Tale of a thoroughly unpleasant loan shark whose misanthropy may be due to
his brutish appearance is oftentimes original on the surface but distancing in tone. With Giacomo
Rizzo, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Laura Chiatti, Gigi Angelillo, Clara Bindi, Barbara Valmorin.

socially engaging director Gianni Amelio (THE STOLEN CHILDREN, THE HOUSE KEYS), is a look
at the realities of corporate China today with actor/director Sergio Castellitto as
a tradesman encountering bureaucracy and bewildering contradictions. Shot entirely in
China, the film is inspired by Ermanno Rea’s novel, La Dismissione. In
competition at the 2006 Venice Film Festival. With Zhou Ting.

Painter/sculptor Mimmo Paladino offers an original reinterpretation of Miguel Cervantes'
novel, with Peppe Servillo as Don Quijote and Italian music legend Lucio Dalla
as Sancho Panza. Also starring Alessandro Bergonzoni, Enzo Cucchi, Ginestra Paladino,

who stars in the role of a Nazi war criminal escaped to South America avoiding trial in
the late 1940’s. Thomas Kretschmann is his son, a young German lawyer who
travels to Brasil searching for his father hoping for a final, impossible resolution. From
the book Vati by Peter Schneider. Also starring F. Murray Abraham, Camillo
