Tribute to Lorenzo Semple, Jr.

Screenwriter, playwright and short-story author Lorenzo
Semple Jr. garnered acclaim as a television writer during the medium's golden
age, scripting episodes of "Kraft Suspense Theatre," "Rat Patrol" and
other hits. He struck gold with his work on TV's "Batman," for which he wrote
the pilot and several episodes (he also was the series' story editor, leaving his mark on
the entire first season), before scripting the 1966 feature film version of the program.
Semple went on to write some of the American cinema's greatest screenplays, including the
political thrillers THREE DAYS OF THE CONDOR and THE PARALLAX VIEW. Join us for two double
features representing two sides of Semple's sensibility: the comic book escapades of BATMAN
and 1980's FLASH GORDON and the sly satire of PRETTY POISON
and THE MARRIAGE OF A YOUNG STOCKBROKER.

screen more tongue-in-cheek antics from Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward) as they
battle a villainous alliance of the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), the Joker (Cesar Romero),
the Riddler (Frank Gorshin) and the Catwoman (Lee Meriwether). Trailer

min. Dir. Mike Hodges. This adaptation of Alex Raymond’s comic strip has just the
right balance of action, tongue-in-cheek humor and mindblowing production design, with a
score by none other than Queen! Relative unknowns Sam J. Jones and Melody Anderson play
Flash and Dale, but the supporting cast is full of heavyweights, including Max von Sydow,

is paroled to a small-town factory job where his secret-agent fantasy life fuels romance
with budding cheerleader Tuesday Weld in Lorenzo Semple Jr.’s ferociously dark and
