For the past 50 years, a steady stream of kinetically charged and
revolution-revved rock documentaries have invaded the public eye and ear. Join us for a
pounding, pulsing and awesomely defiant weekend of rock documentaries, including Stephen
Kijak’s new Rolling Stones documentary STONE IN EXILE, the Maysles brothers'
GIMME SHELTER, D.A. Pennebaker's MONTEREY POP, the restored extended version of
Mel Stuart's WATTSTAX and the ultimate convergence of late 1960s legends, WOODSTOCK.

Mods & Rockers Special Rolling Stones Double Feature:
West Coast Theatrical Premiere of New Stones film! STONES IN EXILE, 2010, Passion Pictures, 61 min.
Director Stephen Kijak created this fascinating doc about the 1971 "Exile On Main
Street" album from extensive unseen footage of the debauched French Riviera sessions,
as well as hindsight perspectives from the survivors and rare outtakes from the Stones'

GIMME SHELTER, 1970, Janus Films, 91 min. Dir.
Albert & David Maysles. The celebrated film of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour that
culminated in the cataclysm at Altamont. Also features Jefferson Airplane and the Flying

Double Feature: MONTEREY POP, 1968, Pennebaker Films, 78 min. Directed by
D.A. Pennebaker. This salute to the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival revives the
world-changing excitement brought on by the likes of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Otis
Redding, The Who and others.
Restored Extended Version: WATTSTAX, 1973, Sony Repertory, 104 min. Dir. Mel Stuart. This
landmark 1972 concert teamed soul music with Black Pride – and was dubbed the
"black Woodstock." The film presents a slew of great Stax Records artists
performing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, including Rufus & Carla Thomas, the
Staple Singers, Albert King, Johnnie Taylor Kim Weston the Bar-Kays and closing act Isaac
Hayes. We also experience the churches, shops and streets of Watts, just seven years after

performance 40 years ago, the then 35-year-old Cohen held a crowd of 600,000 spellbound
for an hour-long show that started at 4 a.m. The best film document of Cohen’s early
period, including major hits such as "Suzanne," "So Long
Marianne," "The Stranger Song," "Hey, That's No Way To Say
Goodbye," "Diamonds In The Mine" and "Famous Blue Raincoat" -
with Cohen backed by his group The Army - led by producer Bob Johnston. Trailer
BOB DYLAN: THE OTHER SIDE OF THE
MIRROR, 2007, MLF, 83 min. Dir. Murray Lerner. Drawing from hours of
previously unseen footage shot over several years at the Newport Folk Festival in the
early-to-mid 1960s. Murray Lerner documents the remarkably swift metamorphosis of Bob
Dylan from his first Newport appearance in the summer of 1963 as the scrawny,
Guthrie-inspired protest singer to his historic and controversial 1965 appearance
unveiling his new rock-star incarnation. Plus previously unseen Dylan performances!

Director Murray Lerner Oscar-nominated documentary chronicles all the major artists
at the Newport Folk Festival from 1962 to 1966. Includes Dylan, Joan
