"In those days I was so brazen, I could
strut sitting down." - Phil Spector

August 19 - 25: Limited Engagement
Thursday, August 19 - 7:30 PM
"Not only a hell of an exclusive but a work of art itself, a synthesis of a
psychological profile, a critical history and a candid, surprising interview. An
overwhelming experience." - Andrew Billen, The Times (London)
"A dark, gripping, revelatory and at times hilarious
portrait. Spector himself is utterly captivating. Unmissable." - Andrew Male, Mojo
(UK)

"...creepily riveting...," Stephen Holden, The
New York Times
"
until this
movie, I didnt fully grasp how much the defining characteristic of his classic
songs, most of which he composed himself, isnt just the Wall of Sound. Its the
Wall of Sadness. Its the underlying (and overwhelming) melancholy of teen rapture
thats destined, in its pure dense satiny perfection, to be a dream of love, rather
than a reality. The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector pays tribute to that dream, and
to the price Phil Spector made himself pay for dreaming it." Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment
Weekly

West Coast Premiere! Exclusive
Los Angeles Limited Engagement! THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY OF PHIL SPECTOR,
2008/2009, BBC Arena/VIXPIX Films, 102 min. Dir. Vikram Jayanti. "The great
songwriter and record producer, the sonic auteur of the shoop-shoop era, has seen his vast
musical achievements eclipsed, in recent years, by his tabloid tribulations - notably his
2009 conviction on charges of murdering the actress Lana Clarkson. This documentary by
Vikram Jayanti has the great virtue of delving deeply into Spector's artistic legacy,
through well-chosen video and sound clips, incisive and analytical supertitles by
Spector's biographer Mick Brown, and, most of all, by Spector's own recollections. He is
featured in a series of in-depth interviews, in which he discusses his classic work in
illuminating detail and also insistently reminds viewers, in case they've forgotten, what
a great artist he is." - Richard Brody, The New Yorker. Discussion following opening night screening with director Vikram
Jayanti. The opening night screening only (8/19) is in the Lloyd E. Rigler (616
seat theatre).
