The First Annual Sydney Pollack Award presented by the American Cinematheque in honor of Sydney Pollack (1934-2008).
Sydney Pollacks long-standing support and early leadership on the Cinematheque Board of Directors was instrumental in ensuring the Cinematheques future. He was a member of the Board of Directors for 24 years (1984 to 2008) and served as Chairman of the Board from 1985 to 1993.
Sydney Pollacks involvement with the American Cinematheque grew out of a belief in the importance of the proper exhibition of all kinds of films old and new, foreign, independent, animation, documentaries, etc. in an atmosphere that encouraged a dialogue between filmmakers and the audience. He was also very aware of the importance of film preservation and independent filmmaking, and was a founding Board member of The Sundance Institute and the Film Foundation.
The Sydney Pollack Award will honor someone who has been of critical importance and continuing influence in non-profit film exhibition, film preservation and/or independent film promotion and distribution people whose work Sydney supported and found to be so valuable, who are not often recognized for their efforts.
Geoffrey Gilmore, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, is the first recipient of the Sydney Pollack Award.
Mr. Gilmore began his career at the UCLA Film & Television Archives as head of the Programming Department, and is currently a member of the UCLA Faculty where he teaches in the Producers Program. He has been Director of the Sundance Film Festival for the past 19 years, and under his guidance, the Festival has become one of the pre-eminent festivals in the world, the most important American festival to showcase and promote independent filmmaking in the United States. He also directs the annual Sundance Independent Producers Conference, as well as hosting a range of international seminars and conferences on independent filmmaking and distribution, and has served on many international film juries.
The Award will be presented by Rick Nicita, Chairman, Cinematheque Board of Directors before the American Cinematheque Tribute to Samuel L. Jackson at the Beverly Hills Hotel, Beverly Hills, CA.
