THE AMERICAN CINEMATHEQUE PRESENTS TWO SPECIAL ONE NIGHT FILM PROGRAMS IN SEPTEMBER A Night at the Egyptian: A Tribute To Victor Saville (Wednesday, September 13) and Vibroboy: An Evening With Jan Kounen In Person (Wednesday, September 20)
HOLLYWOOD – The American Cinematheque at the Egyptian will present two special one night events in September. On Wednesday, September 13 at 7:00 PM is A Tribute to Victor Saville, one of the founding fathers of British cinema in the 1920’s and 1930’s. Victor Saville (1897 – 1979) was a wonderfully gifted and urbane director and producer who helped launch the careers of Vivien Leigh, Robert Donat, Greer Garson, Jessie Matthews and Alfred Hitchcock (who had his first professional film job working for Saville).To celebrate the publication of his new book, Victor Seville In His Own Words, his longtime friend Roy Moseley will present two of Saville’s best-loved films, EVERGREEN (1934) and GOODBYE MR. CHIPS (1939).
On Wednesday, September 20 is Vibroboy: An Evening With Jan Kounen. French filmmaker Jan Kounen’s use of vibrant color, extreme camera angles and rapid editing have had an enormous impact on contemporary visual style in commercial, video and feature filmmaking. His highly stylized feature DOBERMANN, an homage to gangster films will screen, as well as a program of short films, including a post-modern version of the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale, and “Vibroboy,” the story of a neurotic, misanthropic superhero. Jan Kounen will appear for discussions following each program. All screenings are at the newly renovated Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre at the historic Egyptian (6712 Hollywood Boulevard between Highland and Las Palmas) in Hollywood. VICTOR SAVILLE: Wednesday, September 13, 2000 At 7:00 PM is a double-feature of two of Victor Saville's best loved films: EVERGREEN, 1934, 90 min. starring the irresistible, elastic Jesse Matthews as a British music-hall performer who masquerades as her famous mother, and GOODBYE, MR. CHIPS, 1939, MGM (Warner Classics), 114 min., dir. Sam Wood, with Robert Donat in his Oscar-winning role as a devoted British schoolteacher who blossoms when he meets the love of his life, Greer Garson. Author Roy Moseley will join us in-person to sign copies of his new book, Victor Saville In His Own Words, published by Southern Illinois University Press.
JAN KOUNEN: Wednesday, September 20, 2000 The Wednesday, September 20th program begins at 7:00 PM with a showcase of Jan Kounen's short films. “Gisele Kerosene” (1993, 5 min.) Come, take a ride! Set in a deserted modern cityscape, new millenium witches chase after their “Holy Grail” on electric broomsticks. We dare you to count the edits and camera set-ups. Whooossshhhh! “Vibroboy” (1994, 28 min.) We jet from rural Mexico to a desolate spot in urban France. Mythical statues, tribes of Indians and “El Vibro,” alias VIBROBOY, a super hero, who in opposition to the norm, vows a neurotic hatred towards all forms of life. “La Derniere Chaperone Rouge” (1996, 26 min.) Emmanuelle Beart stars as the last “Red Riding Hood” in this big-budget, jaw-dropper that creatively mixes music video, opera & fairy tale with an original, postmodern score. Excerpts from some of Kounen’s video and commercial work may also screen. Discussion to follow with director Jan Kounen.
The Wednesday, September 20th program continues at 9:00 PM with DOBERMANN, 1997, Miramax, 103 min. From the controversial opening credit sequence to the alternating comic and bizarre twists and turns, DOBERMANN is a relentless attack on the audience’s senses. Vincent Cassel (MESSENGER: STORY OF JOAN OF ARC, ELIZABETH) stars as “Dobermann,” the biggest, baddest gang-leader around. Highly stylized with non-stop action, plot twists, comic savagery, bloodlust and outrageous costume design, DOBERMANN is at once a spoof and an homage to gangster films with a speed-crazed, post-modern visual and aesthetic kick.
