HOLLYWOOD - The American Cinematheque's THE ALTERNATIVE SCREEN: INDEPENDENT
FILM SHOWCASE will present THE BEST OF THE SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2001,
three programs of award-winning features and shorts. The screenings will
take place on February 7 at 8:00 PM; February 8 at 7:00 PM and 9:15 PM. Each
program will consist of different films. The films that are actually
screening will be announced on the Slamdance website on January 27th
following the January 26th closing night awards ceremony.
If you didn't make the trek to the snow-capped peaks of Park City, Utah for
the 7th annual Slamdance International Film Festival - or simply couldn't
see EVERYTHING while you were there- you'll have two nights at the Egyptian
to catch up with festival winners. Fresh from the January 26th award
ceremony, we'll bring you the Audience Award winning short and feature; the
Grand Jury selections; "Best Documentary" and various other prize-winners
from the 2001 festival. Schedules permitting, filmmakers, still clutching
their coveted "Sparky" award statuettes, will appear with their films.
Winners will be announced at www.slamdance.com by Jan. 28th. The exact

323.466.FILM by Jan. 30th. IFP/West Member price is $5 for any BEST OF
SLAMDANCE program.
Founded in 1995, Slamdance was conceived as a festival for filmmakers, by
filmmakers. Films in competition must be made by first time filmmakers. The
festival also has a year-round online showcase called "Anarchy" for short
films. The award-winners travel to various cities as part of a "Slamdance on

Filmmakers are scheduled to appear in person at the screening subject to
their availability. All screenings are at the Lloyd E. Rigler Theatre, 6712
Hollywood Boulevard in Hollywood (between Las Palmas Ave. & McCadden Place).
Films will be available for press screening on January 29th or by special

On February 22nd at 7:30 PM the Alternative Screen will collaborate with the
IFP/West to present Tony Barbieri's THE MAGIC OF MARCIANO starring Natasha
Kinski and Robert Forster. The film deals with a hyper-imaginative
9-year-old living with a mother (Kinski) who has mental disorders. He bonds
with an older man (Forster) who he meets on the dock and begins to help him
work on his boat. When his mother can no longer keep herself in check, the
boy is shipped off to foster homes. Will his new friend be able to help him
or are they separated forever? Details of the screening will appear in a
future release.
The Alternative Screen: A Forum For Independent Film Exhibition And Beyond.,
the American Cinematheque's on-going series focusing on independent and new
forms of cinema was created to serve the public as well as the independent
film community in Los Angeles by providing a year-round venue for
independent feature films that have not yet secured wide commercial
distribution. Whatever the ALTERNATIVE SCREEN offers from month to month, it
promises to be provocative, innovative and fiercely independent. Select
Alternative Screen alumni include THE BIBLE & GUN CLUB, HABIT, STAR MAPS,
OUR SONG and THE LAST BIG THING.
The Alternative Screen takes on-going submissions for consideration of
fiercely independent work in all genres. Please send a 1/2" tape to: Margot
