HOLLYWOOD –The American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatres presents Award Season Seminars in February. On Sunday, February 18^th at 1:30 PM is a live taping of KPCC’s Film Week as FilmWeek Oscar preview with host Larry Mantle and local film critics who will preview their icks for this year’s Academy Awards contenders. On Friday, February 23^rd at 7:30 PM is a special screening of George Cukor’s ultimate tale of an actor’s rise to fame, A STAR IS BORN (1954, Warner Bros., 170 min.) starring Judy Garland and James Mason. On Saturday, February 24^th at 10:00 AM is the "Invisible Art, Visible Artists" Seminar presented by the American Cinema Editors. Discover how they went from dailies to Oscar-nominated films at this open discussion with all of this year’s Oscar-nominated editors. Free Admission for this event. On Saturday, February 24^th at 2:30 PM is a seminar with the nominated Art Directors and Set Decorators presented by the Art Directors Guild and Set Decorators Society of America. Art Directors Guild President Thomas A Walsh will moderate the event that will include screening of excerpts from the five films nominated by the Academy. Free Admission for this event. Screenings and seminars are at the Lloyd E. Theatre at the historic Egyptian (6712 Hollywood Boulevard between Highland and Las Palmas) in Hollywood. The Friday, February 23^rd program is a 7:30 PM screening of A STAR IS BORN, (1954, Warner Bros., 170 min.). Alcoholic failing star Norman Maine (James Mason) discovers and marries rising matinee idol songbird Esther Blodgett (Judy Garland), in director George Cukor’s emotionally incandescent remake of William Wellman’s 1937 version. Fueled by Garland’s terrifying vulnerability, Cukor’s flawless direction, a superb script by Moss Hart and production designer Gene Allen’s (MY FAIR LADY) brilliant evocation of Hollywood wealth and power, A STAR IS BORN (shown here in the restored, 170 min. version) is an amazing synthesis of on-screen drama, music and behind-the-scenes myth. Following at 2:30 PM is a free seminar with all of the Oscar nominated Production Designers and Set Decorators. Presented by Art Directors Guild and Set Decorators Society of America. This panel discussion with Academy Award nominated Production Designers and Set Decorators will be conducted by Art Directors Guild President Thomas A. Walsh. Excerpts from the five films nominated by the Academy will be screened. Free Admission. Tickets available on day of seminar only at box office. No online ticketing.

About the American Cinematheque
Established in 1981, the American Cinematheque is a 501 C 3 non-profit viewer-supported film exhibition and cultural organization dedicated to the celebration of the Moving Picture in all of its forms. At the Egyptian Theatre, the Cinematheque presents daily film and video programming which ranges from the classics of American and international cinema to new independent films and digital work. Exhibition of rare works, special and rare prints, etc., combined with fascinating post-screening discussions with the filmmakers who created the work, are a Cinematheque tradition that keep audiences coming back for once-in-a-lifetime cinema experiences. The American Cinematheque renovated and reopened (on Dec. 4, 1998) the historic 1922 Hollywood Egyptian Theatre. This includes a state-of-the-art 616-seat theatre housed within Sid Grauman's first grand movie palace on Hollywood Boulevard. The exotic courtyard is fully restored to its 1922 grandeur. The Egyptian was the home of the very first Hollywood movie premiere in 1922. In January 2005 the American Cinematheque expanded its programming to the 1940 Aero Theatre on Montana Avenue in Santa Monica.
